IC and Kitchen Spices: 14 Balancing Herbs

Large medicinal herb and spice selection also used in magical poThe use of spices is the same as the use of herbs in the energy science model of nutrition and health  The use of spices is the same as the use of herbs  A spice is considered a herb but not all herbs are spices  The spice cabinet in your kitchen if viewed energetically can become a medicine cabinet full of energetic remedies  But just as medicines can help us, some can cause us dis-ease so we need to learn how to use spices properly for our benefit

This is particularly true in the case of the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia)  Because most spices are used to help improve digestive fire, they make agni stronger so that our own digestive process is more effective in breaking down the food, absorbing it, and assimilating it into our bodies as organ(eg, liver and brain) and tissue cells(eg muscle and blood

Spices….Cooling or Heating?  Which Ones to Use?

Most of the commonly used spices in recipes today are heating  Mediterranean recipes call for hot spices such as oregano, garlic, rosemary, and thyme  These spices are not only heating but have the taste of pungent which is composed of the qualities of hot, dry, light, mobile. sharp, and rough  This heating group of spices is particularly good during winter time when our mindbodies need extra heat for digestion of foods

However when your mindbody already shows signs of excess heat as in conditions such as the IC bladder pain syndrome where the symptoms of the hot quality is present in abundance. the above heating spices can be very problematic as most with IC can attest to

14 Cooling Spices

Among the spices there are a group that can be cooling and because of this can be medicinal when too much heat is present  You’re interested in improving your digestion, absorption, and assimilation but not at the expense of worsening your IC symptoms and risking a flare

There are 10 spices or herbs that you can use all the time and not risk too much heat  They are balancing for everyone with high Pitta or too much heat

 Use all the time

Cardamom Coriander Cumin Dill Fennel Mint Rosewater Saffron Turmeric Vanilla  Do some of these sound familiar?  Our common medicinal CCF tea is made from the cumin, coriander, and fennel seeds  Furthermore they are medicinal to the urinary tract  Other herbs you may recognize are mint, dill, rosewater and vanilla  Turmeric is on of the most powerful antiinflammatories in this group and saffron even though expensive can be another great alternative in this cooling group  These cooling spices are used in the detoxifying kitchari  You’ll notice there are no heating spices in this dish

Cooling but use with self evaluation

Cinnamon Fresh basil  Fresh ginger Neem leaves Parsley  These spices can be heating and cooling so should be used with some caution and awareness, testing the spice to see what effects it has on your own energetic physiology  For example fresh ginger due to its liquid quality(dry ginger is really hot and should not be used) can have this heating quality reduced   So ginger tea made with fresh ginger can be medicinal for some but in some situations with Pitta really out of whack, even fresh ginger can be too hot  This is also true of fresh basil  Of the group parsley is the hottest and probably least tolerated

Remember parsley’s look a like in the store Cilantro which is an excellent cooling veggie since it is fresh coriander leaves

IC produces not only bladder pain that can be intermittent(as in flares) but also often involves the vaginal canal(vulvodynia),  pelvic floor muscles, and often the rectum   And as is common with all people with IC there is some form of bowel involvement with symptoms since from an energy science point of view the disease arises from the GI tract Why the Pelvic Nerves? Since flares are related to mounting inflammation in the mindbody and acidity is a primary source of the hot quality as a result of the sour taste in foods it makes sense that you would use alkalinity to reverse the process And many people with IC bladder pain, GERD, IBS, and fibromyalgia  swear by it Recently a client told me about alkaline water   It brought back memory of my friend’s picture seen to the left  It is indeed stranger than fiction Now under the right conditions with minor acidity, using baking soda could be of value ...

The Association of IC and Fibromyalgia

It is estimated that many people with fibromyalgia(FM) have an IC like symptom complex in mild form as well only to exacerbate as the years progress As a matter of fact that’s why IC is now looked upon as a syndrome of diseases rather than an isolated disease of the urinary bladder   The energy science due to its way of looking at disease doesn’t create disease labels but sees all problems in the body as imbalances of qualities and hence with such a system of healing leaves clustering of disease labels as the way to understand...

If It’s Good Enough for Cancer It’s Good Enough For IC: The 4 Key Ingredients to Recovery from IC

Woman in painNo one with the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia) would argue that having this chronic problem is not stressful  As a matter of fact chronic disease of any form is stressful and wears on the physiology  This is because living with energetic imbalances that don’t allow for the free flow of physiologic energy produces dis-ease

When one is in a state of ease everything including bodily functions becomes easy and unconscious  Urinary and rectal elimination is automatic and almost taken for granted  There is no disruption or alteration of consciousness because the mindbody is just humming along  So stress is the opposite  Small things such as going to the bathroom become monumental tasks and therefore stressful

Mindbody Connection

As I’ve discussed in the past the only way to understand the mindbody as being one is to see the mind and body as both energy fields  We cannot see the mind and body as intimately spliced from a molecular point of view since the mind is primarily an energy field not a molecular field

It’s not surprising then to say that the most molecular refined expression of mind is our DNA  Behaviors and herbs all cause shape shifting in our DNA on a daily basis  So when Canadian researchers have shown that change in DNA(see link below) occurs in cancer patients who took up a 3 month practice of meditation it’s clear that the mindbody energy connection is demonstrating itself

What this says is that reducing the stressful effects of chronic disease is important and the way we can do that is to quiet the mind for 20minutes or more daily  One can choose mantra or breath awareness combining it with SoHum(so on inhalation hum on exhalation)

Multimodality Therapy

As I’ve discussed in the past in energy science work it’s not just one thing that you do that will bring about healing with the IC bladder pain syndrome  Rather it’s a multiplicity of things that are done by the physiology in order to change the chronic imbalances that have created the symptoms  Here are 4 key ingredients in a health plan that can bring about healing and recovery of IC

Meditation is a technique to quiet the mind  In the course of meditation there can be lots and lots of thoughts In this setting these thoughts represent stress that needs to be released  Meditation provides the context by which this stress can be released  The mindbody becomes like a 4th of July sparkler with stress exuding from it

Pranayama as we talked over the last 2 weeks is not only a meditation but also improves agni of all the tissues but also helps eliminate ama

Nutrition that does not bring on more toxicity or helps support burning off toxicity is foundational

Improving and Normalizing Agni is a major part of getting our health back because in chronic illness agni always suffers

IC and Pranayama: An Energy Science Therapy

PranayamaLast week I discussed why pranayama or breathing exercises can be helpful as part of the energy science solution in helping with the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia)  As I have explained in the past, in contrast to the matter science approach to disease, the energy science approach uses a multimodality approach in treating the qualitative imbalances of mobile, dull, rough, hot, and often times heavy

Pranayama as I explained last week burns ama which is a result of poor agni  These breathing techniques each build on one another to enhance the agni of every tissue level in the body  When ama is released from the tissues then the qualities can move back to the GI tract for elimination through various methods

The Pranayama Sequence

The sequence is important as it progressively mobilizes Kapha and ama by increasing tissue agni or heat in the tissues from the grossest(bone muscle) to most subtle tissue layers(nervous) Due to the removal of ama this sequence becomes a form of detoxification  For those of you familiar with pranayama practices these terms will be familiar but the sequence and how the pranayamas are done is what makes this sequence energetically medicinal  For those unfamiliar with these there are places on the internet you can view them or if interested we could set up a demonstration to get you started  Start low and gradually build to maximum number

Bastrika  forceful inhalation forceful exhalation  10-100(5 min)

Kapalabhati passive inhalation forceful exhalation  100-1000(10 min)

Anulom villom forceful inhalation forceful exhalation using alternate nostrils 10-60(5 min)

Agni sar retention with abdominal pumping  5-10 reps

Bhramari  known as bumblebee breath this is done with a specific mudra to enhance attention and the process 5-17 reps

Utjayi  inhalation with right arm raising coupled with forceful exhalation using only the chandra channel 5-17 reps

Shitali Shitkari  breath to cool particularly the nervous system down after heat generation of the above  5-17 reps

Utgeet breath to seal the practice 5-17 reps

A Simple Cheap Effective Way to Help Change IC

Breath techniqueThe energy science of Ayurveda views disease as imbalance of qualities or vibrational frequencies that produce symptoms in specific tissues  As in the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia)the qualities from the gut lodge into the pelvic nerves  These then begin producing the symptoms of burning(hot quality) in the urethra and vagina, urinary frequency(mobile quality) and urgency, and aching(dull and rough qualities) suprapubic pain  This often occurs in an episodic way, the so called flare

Why Don’t These Qualities Go Away?

The qualities lodge into the pelvic nerves(nervous tissue) and fail to return to the GI tract due to toxicity associated with them which is called ama  The reason that ama or toxic load occurs in the first place is related to poor agni which I have blogged about in the past  This is why I have emphasized various agni enhancing techniques such as CCF tea

This sticky gooey substance “gums up the tissues” so to speak trapping the qualities that have migrated from the gut into the nervous tissue

How to Get Rid of Tissue Ama?

In the energy science there are several ways to remove nervous tissue ama but one of the simplest ways is to improve the agni or digestive fire of the nervous tissue itself  If the tissue ama plugging up the works and holding the qualities in the nervous tissue then the simple solution is to burn off the ama or toxic load  Physical exercise in general is a good way to improve agni and hence burn off ama

Breathing exercises called pranayama specifically can stimulate tissue agni and burn off ama hence leading the nervous tissue release of the excessive qualities and send them back to the GI tract for removal

5 Things To Know About the Exercises

1 This is a very specific set of pranayama done in specific way to burn off ama

2 Should be done consistently on a daily basis, first thing in the morning

3 Takes about 30 minutes a day when doing the full sequence

4 How long to see results is based on how much ama is present  Said another way, how long have you been sick?  The rule of thumb is 2months for every year of IC

5 Requires sitting to produce an erect posture

Next week I’ll outline the pranayama sequence that can change your life

This is simple, cheap and only requires your initiative  What have you got to lose except being healthier by doing the exercise?  Too good to be true?  See for yourself

IC is a systemic disease  Many matter science medical authorities who write about IC agree that in some way it is a systemic disease but the current matter science medical...

Three Steps to Take to Understand Energy Science Healing

The chronicbladder pain from IC seeks a solution but you are told that the “dis-ease is treatable  not curable” But what would it be like if there was a solution?  Is it possible?  We are led to believe a lie, when we give up hope  And obviously there is no quick fix or IC wouldn’t be a problem  But what would it be like to have your life back?  Too hard to believe?  Well read on The experience amongst IC patients is that the diet promoted by ICA or ICN may work for some, not for others  Sometimes works for awhile...

Some have asked about this problem of fatigue associated with the chronic bladder pain of the IC syndrome  It is natural to have fatigue if you have a chronic disease associated with pain  And of course all of us want more energy in our lives  But to make the association of pain and fatigue is simplistic at best and will not get you closer to dealing with the problem of the pain most of the time Pain IC and Fatigue:  An Energy Science Perspective So pain and fatigue are not related as to cause  The association is true true unrelated  Yes...

Baking Soda and IC: Is There Value?

Since flares are related to mounting inflammation in the mindbody and acidity is a primary source of the hot quality as a result of the sour taste in foods it makes sense that you would use alkalinity to reverse the process And many people with IC bladder pain, GERD, IBS, and fibromyalgia  swear by it Recently a client told me about alkaline water   It brought back memory of my friend’s picture seen to the left  It is indeed stranger than fiction Now under the right conditions with minor acidity, using baking soda could be of value ...

Practical Aspects of Detoxification

Our readers often posit questions about the painful bladder syndrome or IC  that I think are valuable for our community  In this week’s blog I wanted to address some of them that have come up about recently posted blog topics Why Detoxification? It is wonderful to see that you have such a clear grasp of IC and its many forms.   As you know the bladder and/or pelvic pain of IC can be unbearable and there is not much for it except pain medications  But the issue is what is the root cause of the pain  You may find the answer from your matter science doctor if a workup is done(and I would suggest that you have this done) in order to rule out other causes of your pain  But typically the workup is negative and from the Western perspective there is no root cause From an energy science point of view there is no pain with the Vata energy pattern  Vata is the energy...

IC and Its Relationship to Fibromyalgia: 3 Things That You Can Do

Woman in painAs part of the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, and GERD) fibromyalgia seems to be the most unrelated of all the diseases listed in the syndrome  That is, if you understand that from an energy science point of view all disease begins in the GI tract and so IBS and GERD make a whole lot of sense

But fibromyalgia(FM) which at one time was labeled as muscular arthritis seems remotely associated with the pelvic diseases that make up the syndrome  However as I have written about in the past the energy science sees this bladder syndrome as being created in the GI tract as an imbalance of qualities or vibrational frequencies that when the pressure is high enough leave the gut and disseminate to the adjacent pelvic plexus of nerves to bring about symptoms

What Ties IC and FM Together?

IC involves the nervous tissue of the pelvic plexus of nerves around the rectum , prostate, vagina, and bladder  Dependent on which nerves are involved determines which organs will be most symptomatic  If the nerves going to the vagina are more involved then the symptoms of vulvodynia predominate and the bladder symptoms are less  Or the converse can be true, where most of the symptoms are bladder and there may be no or little vaginal symptoms  I have written several blog posts regarding the pelvic innervation involvement

Both IC and FM energetically arise from the colon  In IC the imbalance of qualities leads to distribution to the pelvic nerves  In FM the classic distribution of these qualities can go to the muscles and and the soft tissues around the joints  Symptoms of pain and burning come and go and become migratory, sometimes in one area only to move to another  In this way the toxic load associated with Vata and Pitta find their way to muscles of the body

But in another form of FM there can be arthritic like symptoms  From an energy science view the nervous system and the joint space are anatomically connected  This is because the major function of this tissue layer is to fill space  Any space in the body including the joint spaces are part of the nervous system tissue  This explains why some people with IC can have arthritis like symptoms and/or muscle like symptoms labeled as FM

3 Things You Can Do

Apart from obvious things of eating a nutritional format appropriate for your energy makeup and avoiding incompatible food combinations here are 3 things that you can do to treat FM in either form

1 Massaging medicated oil into the painful muscle points or around the involved joints can be relieving to these areas  Mahanaryan oil is a very potent oil used in this type of complex of symptoms

2 The use of ginger powder mixed with mahanaryan oil can be effective to involved tissues because over time the ginger will help to burn off the toxic load that comes to these involved areas with Vata and Pitta

Basti  As I have written before in previous posts the treatment to get rid of the collected qualities or vibrational frequencies that have accumulated in the above tissue sites whether in the muscle or joint space is to allow them to come back to the GIT  This happens when there is a negative pressure created in the colon by the use of medicated basti

IC and 4 Animal Foods That Everyone Can Have

Buffalo Slow DownAs most people with the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia) inflammation is the triggering issue around the syndrome  And a number of foods energetically will cause inflammation such as tomatoes, hot chiles, salsa, carbonated drinks, and coffee  But what about animal foods?  Where do they fall in the mix and why?

Animal Foods To Avoid With IC and Why

In the energy science world of nutrition a fatty acid is inflammatory  End of story  So any fatty meat such as domestic beef, lamb, and the worst offender pork are all on the No No list

Salt is inflammatory as a taste because energetically it carries the hot quality  So fish whose meat has lived in saltwater for most of their lives will carry the hot quality due to the salt  So saltwater fish such as salmon, cod, halibut, and so on will be problematic except for one exception below

4 Animal Foods That Everyone Can Have

Nondomesticated animal foods  Following from what I just discussed nondomesticated meats such as buffalo, venison, moose, elk, and rabbit are excellent sources of animal protein due to the extremely low fat content

Egg whites  While egg yolks can be used occasionally(1-2x/wk) egg whites can be used all the time by everyone  The egg yolk has. you guessed it, a lot of fatty acids whereas the whites are pure protein  You can buy egg whites in the grocery store in container cartons

Shrimp  My fav of the list because shrimp even in salt water don’t take on the salt that other seafood do  Plus there is a freshwater variety of shrimp that is available as well

Freshwater fish  These fish are as good a source of omega 3 fatty acids as their seafood counterparts but without the salt  So fish like pike, walleye, trout, bluegill and others are great choices  Tillapia is a freshwater fish which is a bottom feeder with many sources coming from China and for several reasons I’m not a big fan of the fish but this is clearly an individual bias
