IC and More Nutritional Antiinflammatories

The symptoms from the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia) can get ramped up during the summer months due to the hot quality that gets even more expressed  We’ve chosen eleven ingredients we like that cool Pitta dosha particularly during the hot summer months  If we’ve missed one of your favorites, please let us know in the comment section below

river cooling11 Ways to Cool Off

1. Coconut
There are so many ways to use coconut and so many coconut products to enjoy – coconut water, coconut non-dairy milk and the traditional coconut flakes. Be aware that the oil, while it is certainly cooling, is not recommended for Vata and Kapha

2. Cilantro
Use as a garnish, stir chopped cilantro into a soup or toss with your salad greens.

3. Mint
Mint makes an amazing tea, loved by many. Toss fresh mint into your salad, on fruit or dessert.

4. Fennel
Fennel is wonderfully aromatic with its anise or licorice scent. Saute the seeds in oil to add to your favorite soups or stews. Add the powder to your chai or favorite hot beverage, or sprinkle onto your salad or dinner entree.

5. Rose Water
Add a dash to smoothies, rice puddings or a bowl of fruit. Substitute rose water for vanilla extract in recipes.

6. Pomegranate Molasses
The sugar that condenses when pomegranate juice is cooked forms pomegranate molasses and is quite heavenly. Add to salad dressings, dips and spreads, and use in marinades.

7. Sunflower Oil
This oil is traditionally used externally in Ayurveda as a cooling oil for Pitta. Enjoy sunflower oil as a substitute for vegetable oil. It is mild and light.

8. Maple Syrup
Use this cooling sweetener as you would any sugar. Would also be delicious in salad dressings and marinades.

9. Ghee
Ghee is clarified butter. It is beneficial for all three doshas (kaphas should use in moderation). It is delicious and easy to make. Use as you would butter or oil.

10. Turmeric
Turmeric has certainly seen a lot of press the past few years for it’s amazing health benefits. And fortunately it’s not difficult to add to your diet. Rice dishes, or potato or egg salads all taste delicious with some added turmeric. And of course there is curry!

11  Chyawanprash is a tasty Ayurvedic jam usually taken with warm water, milk, milk substitute whose prinicipal ingredient is amla derived from a berry that has very high Vitamin C but is not acidic  It’s very valuable in high Pitta conditions and therefore antiinflammatory   Here’s a link http://goo.gl/NMly6a

Qualities NOT Molecules: A Different Way of Seeing the Mindbody

Chemical formlaThe chronic pain from the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgiacuseeks a solution but you are told that the “dis-ease is treatable  not curable”

But what would it be like if there was a solution?  Is it possible?  We are led to believe a lie, when we give up hope  And obviously there is no quick fix or IC wouldn’t be a problem  But what would it be like to have your life back?  Too hard to believe?  Well read on

The experience amongst IC patients is that the diet promoted by ICA or ICN may work for some, not for others  Sometimes works for awhile then seems to not work  What gives?  Anecdotal experience at best would be the first thing that comes to mind from such diet recommendations

The Quality of Hot and the Acidity of IC

The energy science views foods as qualities not molecules  This is a complete divergence from mainstream medical thinking  And it stems from how we view the human biology  If we see the mindbody as a group of molecules as well as the food we consume then are limiting ourselves  We know from E=mc2 that matter and energy are interchangeable at a constant  So what is matter is energy and what is energy is matter  We are simultaneously both a particle and a wave form  The current medical model sees only the human biology as  a matter field

And so the dietary recommendations that you follow are molecular based   So the matter science states that it’s the molecule of acid in the urine brings about the symptoms of IC  Eliminate acid provoking foods and the IC is cleared  Ah, if it were that simple!

From an energy perspective the IC pain comes from too much of the hot quality and the frequency of urination comes from too much of the mobile quality  When we eat foods that contain these qualities in abundance you get out of balance and dis-ease occurs

Three Steps to Energy Science Nutrition

The first thing to do is to find out who you are from an energy science point of view  Although not perfect this quiz will help you determine who you are from an energy science view  This is very important because for some a particular food may be balancing for some and completely imbalancing for someone else  A good example of this is the tomato  For PV completely unacceptable and for PK  ok in moderation

The second thing to do is to follow the nutritional format based on the results of the quiz  There are clear instructions as to how to do that at the site foodsheal.com

The third is to begin CCF tea(cumin coriander and fennel seeds in equal proportions together in a plastic bag) by taking a bunch and steeping it in hot water and then sipping on this tea all day  CCF is energetically medicinal to the urinary tract and you guessed it, they all are overall cooling to the urinary channel!

“Fixing” the IC bladder pain syndrome

Woman Stomachache In BedA “flare” is a common phrase used in IC circles to describe the sudden occurrence of pain around voiding  It can also describe the pelvic pain associated with the burning and frequency of urination that can be part of the recurrent symptom complex so characteristic of interstitial cystitis

You may remember the graph on the home page near the bottom  If not go check it out now because it will show you the ups and downs of ANY dis-ease in the physiology  Even acute conditions such as renal colic from urinary stones or appendicitis have these ups and downs through their period of dis-ease  But chronic dis-eases such as IC as you know have their ups and downs as well  And these ups are called flares when there is an upswing  A sudden change in dis-ease or loss of the balanced steady state

But what would it be like to gradually be free of the flares?  If you resolved your flares it would free you up for so many other things that you want to accomplish in your life  If interested read on

Almost universally survey respondents voiced their disbelief that there was not a determined scientific causation by the urological community  What can be done to get help?

Change the Model of Healing

Our current molecular medical model states that the molecule causes the disease  One quote from a survey respondent was “That the pain gets out of control, I stress, I cry and then it gets worse because of the acid pouring into my bladder”  This comment underlies the premise by the current healing model that the acid molecule causes the pain

No question that acid causes the pain  And no question that if a change is diet takes the acid out that molecule then the flares will resolve  End of story  IC is fixed  But unfortunately that’s not the case   You know that by experience

Since Einstein made his elegant mathematical observation E=mc2 matter and energy are recognized as interchangeable at a constant  Because of this new understanding of nature as a scientific world community we are able to put men in space, explore Mars, and enjoy Facebook!  But the world of biological healing is woefully mired in the matter science world of Newtonian physics

If we put on our energy science glasses to view the human physiology we begin to see not molecules but energy patterns that express themselves as qualities   Qualities become the footprints of the biological energy field

For example, words you use contain the clues as to what qualities are occurring in the physiology  “Flare” is one such example   When you use that word what comes up for you?  Heat, hot, a blast of heat  And by the way, what do we say when voiding occurs  It’s burning again suggesting the hot quality

So the current matter or molecular model measures molecules and how they cause disease  The energy science model sees dis-ease in terms of qualities  Too much hot represents an imbalance somewhere in inner space   Dis-ease is an imbalance of qualities

OK, So What?  Just Fix Me

If people are sick some might feel a bit uneasy if they asked their surgeon why he thought they had appendicitis and he responded, “No particular reason  I’d just like to operate this afternoon”   We all want to have confidence in the thinking that goes on behind the scenes in medical decision making particularly when it comes to ME  All healing disciplines should give us that confidence

And when the healing discipline we are using isn’t fixing our painful flare we would like to know why(I would hope but then again people do surprise us)  I contend we have the wrong model for healing certain chronic dis-eases, in this case IC

The reason that this energy versus molecular medical healing model issue is so important is that it’s the difference between having painful flares and living a life that is free of them   This may seem like an outlandish statement but it is true  You just have to trust  the process  Fortunately as you do this energy science work it brings faith and with that more trust

 Three Important Steps

If you’re interested in gradually eliminating flares in your life the first thing to do is:  Take responsibility for your healing  This means among many other things0 that when you are looking at a food choice that is in the NO column that you consciously make the choice to avoid the food  And remember, this is about baby steps  If you haven’t signed up to be part of our growing IC community looking at healing IC not just treating it and getting the free report that will get you started

Visit the energy science nutritional website that can get you started with appropriate nutritional information  More about that in upcoming blogs but for now do the test and then follow the appropriate nutritional format in the left hand column of the page

And lastly remember that if you happen to be on an island and hear the ocean you may want to go see it  Now if you’re a real pioneer and trailblazer you cut through the jungle and finally the ocean and its surf come into view  But most of us would prefer a well trodden path that can reliably take us to that ocean and the white sandy beach  There’s security in that path, not having to make your own way because you know others have come before you and are now helping you find the way  So it is with a healing journey  There is often a lot of anxiety about healing because the outcome is not known  You’re not in control  And that’s uncomfortable for all of us  But with a knowledgeable guide who has taken people on the healing path before you can reach your destination  A consult can be a healthy way to get started in your road to healing the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, chronic prostatitis, vulvodynia, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia)

IC and Prana: 5 Ways to Make Biologic Energy Flow

From present day physics the body can be viewed as an energy field or molecular/matter field  Modern day medicine follows an molecular approach to its study of disease whereas the energy sciences of Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine(acupuncture) have developed sophisticated systems of healing to deal with man’s diseases  The areas where the energy sciences have their most impact is in chronic disease and prevention since as we have discussed in the past the origin of disease is well worked out in the Ayurvedic energy science...

Nutritional Likes and Dislikes

broccoli and toddlerWe all have likes and dislikes in our nutritional diet, don’t we?  In the energy science we call them cravings that are physiologic and nonphysiologic  The former should be satisfied like being thirsty after sweating a lot  But the latter are problematic for us  and often stem from our past history, friends, teachers, but some are darn right desires that try as we might we can’t explain why we avoid or are attracted to them.

So we like things such as coffee, tomatoes, carbonated drinks, hot spices everyday, animal foods such as beef, duck, lamb, pork. We all have that salivation list.

If we look at these through the lens of an energy science nutritional approach we find them as yea and nay, that is yes for you but not for another; and vice versa no for you and yes for the other.

But there are foods and drinks that are universally Nay for everyone and Yea for everyone. Take a look.

Nays  Raw tomatoes, bread with yeast(not toasted), miso, store bought yogurt, pork and lamb, chocolate, coffee, hard liquor, carbonated drinks, icy cold drinks, white sugar, and poor food combinations.

Yeas  Sweet apples, applesauce, sweet berries and cherries, cooked beets, cooked carrots, green beans, cooked leeks, okra, cooked peas, sweet potatoes, summer squash, seitan, sprouted wheat bread(nonyeasted), split mung dal, goat’s milk cottage cheese, egg whites, freshwater fish, ghee, aloe vera, sweet berry juice, tea, grain coffee, grape and mango juice, peach nectar, all the cooling spices, supplements such as calcium magnesium and zinc in moderate amounts, chlorella.

Three observations come to mind for me. There are more yeas than nays. YEA!

Secondly the nays have a lot of attractiveness to them for us in general. White sugar, chocolate are screamers but bread with yeast(if not toasted), and carbonated drinks are also engaging as well.

And lastly, the message is that no matter what energy pattern combination you are as revealed at foodsheal.com there is plenty to eat without risking nutritional imbalance. What a deal, huh?

As part of the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia) acid indigestion as manifested in hyperacidity syndrome(HAS) or gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD) would not be surprising  This is because from an energy science point of view the hot quality(Pitta energy pattern) is a major contributor to the imbalance that creates interstitial cystitis(IC)…the burning on urination, vaginal burning are related to this quality  The other IC imbalancing quality is the mobile...

IC and Yogurt: 7 Guidelines About Its Use

From an energy science point of view the IC bladder pain syndrome( interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia)  is a Vata and Pitta provoked disease, that is, too much hot and mobile qualities in the urinary tract – an imbalance created by the foods consumed   So the obvious first step is to reduce those foods that are Pitta and Vata provoking  When first getting started to get some relief from the burning sensation you can begin with just a Pitta pacifying nutritional format as at icdiet.com...

The energy science of Ayurveda differs from the current conventional medicine model which emphasizes a matter science or molecular approach to disease management  In the energy science approach to healing the model sees imbalance of vibrational frequencies or qualities as the reason for physiologic dis-ease  So in the case of the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia) the qualities of hot and mobile are dominant in the disease expression which leads in the urinary tract...

The Origin of IC: What It Means To You

Einstein and R with NatureThe traditional healing systems such as Ayurveda from India and the Traditional Oriental Medical system both saw the body as an energy field and built elaborate healing sciences around the concept that the body is an energy field.  Today we know from Einstein that this is indeed correct, that what is energy is matter and what is matter is energy, from the famous equation E=MC2.

One of the greatest gifts that the energy science of Ayurveda gives us is the understanding of how all diseases begin in the body.  Ayurveda began with this understanding 5000 years ago and the Greeks who were students of the medical disciplines of India began to realize this as well, hence leading to the above quote from Hippocrates that all diseases begin in the gut.

But this observation of the gut and disease is difficult to understand from the molecular model of the allopathic tradition.  It’s only when we see that the accumulation of imbalancing qualities that leads to deficient agni  Over time these qualities circulate and energetically affect other tissues.  In the IC bladder pain syndrome(intersititial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia) the tissues of the nervous system in advanced cases become the landing point due again to low agni that cause the advanced symptoms of IC.

So this simple observation from the energy science healing traditions can give our current matter field healing discipline valuable insight as to the propagation of disease and the interrelationship of disease and food.

And this observation is why nutrition is central to prevention of disease!  Eating foods that resonate with your own physiology on a regular basis, avoiding poor food combinations, ensuring a good digestive fire to burn slip ups, and paying attention to the interrogatories of nutrition will ensure optimal health.

The Meaning of Food Combinations and IC: 3 Things That You Can Do

What Are You Looking For question asking your mission, goal, queThose with IC know that  acidity has something to do with their bladder pain and other symptoms either intuitively or reading what others have to say about IC and its causative factors

This leads to a large number of dietary recommendations to eliminate the acidity from the diet and to reduce symptoms of pelvic pain

You can go a long way toward resolution of your symptoms if you do fundamental changes in your nutritional format just by eliminating known trigger foods from your food choices  But as I have written before what foods to avoid often comes down to “who’s doing the eating?” because from an energy science viewpoint the nutritional format can be meaningful

Food Incompatibility

At times we don’t know that what we are eating is making us sick  Did you know that pain from IC can also be related to the acidic loading that occurs from poor food combining?

Some foods don’t belong with one another  For example, fruit with any other food is commonly practiced yet it can lead to poor digestion and symptoms of bloating and abdominal pain if done frequent enough  In the energy science of Ayurveda every food has qualities and when foods are combined which are antagonistic to one another they may be toxic to the mindbody

Here’s a list for you to consider

Beans Fruit, cheese, eggs, fish, milk, meat, yogurt
Eggs Fruit (especially melons), beans, cheese, fish, kichari, MILK, meat, yogurt
Fruit As a rule, with any other food. *There are exceptions, such as certain cooked combinations, as well as dates and milk which have the same rasa, virya, and vipaka.
Grains Fruit, tapioca
Honey ** With equal GHEE by weight (e.g. 1 tsp honey with 3 tsp ghee); boiled or cooked honey
Hot Drinks Mangos, cheese, fish, meat, starch, yogurt
Lemon Cucumbers, milk, tomatoes, yogurt
Melons EVERYTHING — especially dairy, eggs, fried food, grains, starches. Melons more than most fruit should be eaten alone or left alone.
Milk BANANAS, cherries, melons, sour fruits, bread containing yeast, fish kitchari
Nightshades, e.g., potato, tomato Melon, cucumber, dairy products
Radishes Bananas, raisins, milk
Tapioca Fruit, especially banana, mango, beans, raisins, jaggary
Yogurt Fruit, cheese, eggs, fish, hot drinks, meat, MILK, nightshades

A strong digestion which I’ll cover in the future is the most important physiologic tool to deal with poor food combining aside from not combining in the first place

An Energy Science Nutritional Approach

From an energy science approach nutrition is more than diet   The study of diet concerns itself wit h molecules of the food ingested   But nutrition takes into account not only the qualities of the foods taken in and how these qualities interact but also the impact of the digestion of foods on the mindbody physiology   This is a very significant difference between matter science and energy science nutrition

So here are 3 things that you can do right now to stop or reduce the flares of IC

1 Check out who you are energetically

2 Choose a nutritional format appropriate for your mindbody energy makeup

3 Go to the orange box and sign up to become a member our growing IC Ayurvedic energy science community
