The healing medical energy science tradition of Ayurveda does its science differently than the current allopathic tradition of healing Hence there is a different medical approach to the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia) Since Ayurveda is an energy science it has a different way of seeing the anatomy(VPK) and physiology(agni)of the mindbody This is quite a bit different than how we see the molecular mind and body from a matter science point of view Both as you know have validity…just a different way of doing science of our biology Here’s a video I did for the local Seattle yoga community
In a recent article the Washington Post(https://wapo.st/30TtyIT) reviewed the reasons people are reluctant to take the COVID vaccine. One significantly addressed reason in the article is that many antivaxxers are followers of alternative health social media platforms that sow misinformation about the current vaccines which mislead their loyal followers who have grown to trust the messaging as reliable and trustworthy. In the past while heavy metal adjuvants such as mercury and aluminum may have had significant effects in...

read moreThe waves of IC experienced as flares mimics the ups and downs of getting sick Most people with any disease can relate to the accompanying graph in which the illness acts like a wave pattern…..good days and bad days, good weeks and bad weeks, and even good months and bad months Anyone who has experienced the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia) can attest to this wave like dis-ease pattern And why wouldn’t it be a wave pattern since the energy body expresses itself as energy or a wave pattern?
So it’s a bumpy ride up or wave like on the way up and it’s done unconsciously….unconsciously because we don’t know we’re making ourselves sick by lifestyle choices
Then there’s the crescendo where flares are pretty routine and expected
But now you decide to take matters into your own hands and begin doing this energy work Now you begin your way down the curve and you experience good days and bad days, good weeks and bad weeks after a while but this time you’re releasing pent up imbalancing qualities such as hot, mobile, light, and perhaps heavy
So are you getting better? The energy science answer is yes because you’re not introducing more imbalances qualities through better and more refined lifestyle choices But these qualities which took time to accumulate take time to release themselves
It’s estimated for those as many as 70% of IC patients that they can get better on their own This group doesn’t have a great deal of pelvic nerve involvement by qualities so a change in lifestyle behavior patterns may do the trick
But if the qualities happen to involve the deep tissues for a long period of time then it will take longer…..2months for every year of imbalance of the disease….and more importantly interventional therapies beyond lifestyle measures This type of work requires a multimodal approach…..that is, many different things being done at the same time And one group of therapies may not be the same as for another person because all imbalances are not created equally The therapies are individualized to the person having the problem
You’ll notice that there are hills and valleys of the wave curve….and these valleys are what I refer to as ditches since you literally feel like you’re crawling out of one when you’re in the lows of it
1 Keep doing the foundational work What this means is to continue to chose foods appropriate for your energy makeup and avoiding incompatible food combinations, observing bedtime and waking hours appropriate for your energy makeup, observing appropriate fluid consumption for your energy makeup, and exercising daily
2 Realize that releases make you feel like you’re going backwards This is understandable but at the same time can be disheartening as you want the symptoms to get better with the work you’re doing
3 As you go through ditch after ditch they are not at deep and severe This is great and makes you feel you’re making progress
4 Get plenty of rest as this requires a lot of energy expenditure Healing is not easy and requires that the old qualities need to be mobilized and shed This requires energy
Fortunately most with the IC bladder pain syndrome don’t have to go through what I’ve discussed here But if you’re far enough along then this is worthwhile information

read moreThe use of spices is the same as the use of herbs in the energy science model of nutrition and health The use of spices is the same as the use of herbs A spice is considered a herb but not all herbs are spices The spice cabinet in your kitchen if viewed energetically can become a medicine cabinet full of energetic remedies But just as medicines can help us, some can cause us dis-ease so we need to learn how to use spices properly for our benefit
This is particularly true in the case of the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia) Because most spices are used to help improve digestive fire, they make agni stronger so that our own digestive process is more effective in breaking down the food, absorbing it, and assimilating it into our bodies as organ(eg, liver and brain) and tissue cells(eg muscle and blood
Most of the commonly used spices in recipes today are heating Mediterranean recipes call for hot spices such as oregano, garlic, rosemary, and thyme These spices are not only heating but have the taste of pungent which is composed of the qualities of hot, dry, light, mobile. sharp, and rough This heating group of spices is particularly good during winter time when our mindbodies need extra heat for digestion of foods
However when your mindbody already shows signs of excess heat as in conditions such as the IC bladder pain syndrome where the symptoms of the hot quality is present in abundance. the above heating spices can be very problematic as most with IC can attest to
Among the spices there are a group that can be cooling and because of this can be medicinal when too much heat is present You’re interested in improving your digestion, absorption, and assimilation but not at the expense of worsening your IC symptoms and risking a flare
There are 10 spices or herbs that you can use all the time and not risk too much heat They are balancing for everyone with high Pitta or too much heat
Use all the time
Cardamom Coriander Cumin Dill Fennel Mint Rosewater Saffron Turmeric Vanilla Do some of these sound familiar? Our common medicinal CCF tea is made from the cumin, coriander, and fennel seeds Furthermore they are medicinal to the urinary tract Other herbs you may recognize are mint, dill, rosewater and vanilla Turmeric is on of the most powerful antiinflammatories in this group and saffron even though expensive can be another great alternative in this cooling group These cooling spices are used in the detoxifying kitchari You’ll notice there are no heating spices in this dish
Cooling but use with self evaluation
Cinnamon Fresh basil Fresh ginger Neem leaves Parsley These spices can be heating and cooling so should be used with some caution and awareness, testing the spice to see what effects it has on your own energetic physiology For example fresh ginger due to its liquid quality(dry ginger is really hot and should not be used) can have this heating quality reduced So ginger tea made with fresh ginger can be medicinal for some but in some situations with Pitta really out of whack, even fresh ginger can be too hot This is also true of fresh basil Of the group parsley is the hottest and probably least tolerated
Remember parsley’s look a like in the store Cilantro which is an excellent cooling veggie since it is fresh coriander leaves

read moreNo one with the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia) would argue that having this chronic problem is not stressful As a matter of fact chronic disease of any form is stressful and wears on the physiology This is because living with energetic imbalances that don’t allow for the free flow of physiologic energy produces dis-ease
When one is in a state of ease everything including bodily functions becomes easy and unconscious Urinary and rectal elimination is automatic and almost taken for granted There is no disruption or alteration of consciousness because the mindbody is just humming along So stress is the opposite Small things such as going to the bathroom become monumental tasks and therefore stressful
As I’ve discussed in the past the only way to understand the mindbody as being one is to see the mind and body as both energy fields We cannot see the mind and body as intimately spliced from a molecular point of view since the mind is primarily an energy field not a molecular field
It’s not surprising then to say that the most molecular refined expression of mind is our DNA Behaviors and herbs all cause shape shifting in our DNA on a daily basis So when Canadian researchers have shown that change in DNA(see link below) occurs in cancer patients who took up a 3 month practice of meditation it’s clear that the mindbody energy connection is demonstrating itself
What this says is that reducing the stressful effects of chronic disease is important and the way we can do that is to quiet the mind for 20minutes or more daily One can choose mantra or breath awareness combining it with SoHum(so on inhalation hum on exhalation)
As I’ve discussed in the past in energy science work it’s not just one thing that you do that will bring about healing with the IC bladder pain syndrome Rather it’s a multiplicity of things that are done by the physiology in order to change the chronic imbalances that have created the symptoms Here are 4 key ingredients in a health plan that can bring about healing and recovery of IC
Meditation is a technique to quiet the mind In the course of meditation there can be lots and lots of thoughts In this setting these thoughts represent stress that needs to be released Meditation provides the context by which this stress can be released The mindbody becomes like a 4th of July sparkler with stress exuding from it
Pranayama as we talked over the last 2 weeks is not only a meditation but also improves agni of all the tissues but also helps eliminate ama
Nutrition that does not bring on more toxicity or helps support burning off toxicity is foundational
Improving and Normalizing Agni is a major part of getting our health back because in chronic illness agni always suffers
